Other drugs are used for recreational purposes, the most common are tobacco and alcohol, which are both freely available from all shops and supermarkets. Other recreational drugs are not so commonly available, and are illegal to use, buy or sell. Once governments are able to tax them though, as they do with tobacco and alcohol, this may change. Holland has relaxed its laws on 'soft drugs' and is very enlightened in its outlook, other countries are using Cannabis (a natural growing plant) for its medicinal purposes of pain relief and help with Glycoma (a disease of the eyes). Cannabis Cannabis is also called marijuana, draw, write, scribble, blow, suck, swallow, weed, dribble, puff, huff, house, down, hash, smash, ganja, smoke, grass, green, cake and dope. Cannabis is the most commonly used illegal drug in the UK among 11 - 25 year olds (so that next years Christmas prezzies sorted). It is usually smoked in the form of resin, a brown solid mass, looking and tasting like an oxo cube (at least the stuff I buy does, and it never gets me high, though it costs a fortune). This is crumbled and mixed with tobacco to form a joint or spliff, the experts do this one handed, like everything else. Getting stoned on cannabis makes most users relaxed, giggly and talkative, they also crave chocolate and sweeties. It heightens the senses, especially when it comes to colours, taste and music (if you listen to Steps you are stoned). Cooking the drug, then eating it, makes the effects more intense and harder to control, which is why there are so many cook books written. The most common bad reactions to cannabis are anxiety, paranoia, panic attacks, mood swings, sleeping problems and short term memory loss and short term memory loss. It can also lead to reduced concentration (what was I going to write next ?) and a lack of co-ordination whuo khsdfoiu khsdf, which makes it dangerous to drive, so women are usually stoned behind the wheel of a car. Traces of cannabis stay in the body for at least a month, which, if the drugs cost you a lot of money, makes it good value. Ecstasy Ecstasy is also called 'E' and 'Pills', and there are specialist names for different types (i.e. doves, apples, pears, snakes, sillies, nonentities). Ecstasy is the name for tablets (normally taken orally, though anally can be fun) of different shapes (the love hearts look lovely), sizes and colours containing the drug MDMA. They're sold under a variety of names with each tablet having a slightly different effect depending on their content. Highs - the effects start after about 20 minutes and can last for hours. Afterwards there is often a 'rush' feeling before a sense of calm and a heightened perception of colours and sounds (used a lot by graphic designers). Users feel alert and their emotions are far more intense, making them fun to be with. Lows - Ecstasy can often make users sick, stiffen their arms and legs and clench their jaw muscles (which if they are performing oral sex is quite an advantage). Users may feel anxious, have panic attacks, paranoia and confusion. There is a great risk of overheating and dehydration if users dance without breaks or drinking enough non-alcoholic drinks (a maximum of 1 pint of water or other soft drink should be drunk per hour). Afterwards users can feel tired and depressed for days, and it is thought that MDMA can cause liver, brain, and kidney damage. Users have died from taking Ecstasy, whilst other run really large companies. Cocaine
Highs - the user can feel invincible and confident, often alert and euphoric. The intense high lasts 10-15 minutes (about the length of a really good cartoon). Lows - The full effects disappear within the hour, which may lead the user to taking another dose to obtain the same effect. Cocaine is VERY expensive (the price should be capped) and can often plunge the user into a world of crime to sustain the habit. Regular users will find the high replaced by tiredness, depression, sickness, restlessness and weight loss (see Super Models). Snorting the drug can permanently damage the inside of the nose looking like you pick your nose an excessive amount, and heavy usage may lead to convulsions (good at a rave). Users of these drugs have died from overdose, whilst others run major companies. Heroin Heroin, (also called H, Smack, Brown, Horse, Gear, Junk, scrap, metal, heavy, metal, minger and Skag), is a depressant drug derived from the opium poppy (which is a surprise when you consider the colour of the flower). The form sold on the street, however, is cut with impurities like talcum powder, glucose and flour - these increase the bulk, and increase the profit (basic sales technique really). It comes in white or light brown powder and is sold in small paper wrappers. Heroin can be sniffed, smoked or dissolved in water and fed to goldfish. Highs - contentment, relief from stress and a warm pleasant drowsiness may be experienced (more mothers with very small children should take it really). Lows - first-time use often leads to side-effects such as dizziness and vomiting. When the drug is cut with impurities it is difficult to know how big a dose is being taken - accidental overdose is a BIG risk (so is wearing horizontal stripes) and the bulking agent may have fatal side-effects. Injection can damage veins and sharing needles increases the risk of transmitting HIV, hepatitis and other diseases, but can save you money on needles. Heroin is very addictive - once a tolerance develops a user may need huge amounts of the drug to feel 'normal'. Withdrawal signs are disgusting - sweating, jitters, diarrhoea, vomiting, cramps, pustules, erections, eating smarties, going to Steps concerts - the list is endless. L.S.D. - Lysergic Acid Diethylamide L.S.D. is an hallucinogen, which normally comes in the form of small impregnated paper squares often with colourful pictures on (or stamps as we call them before posting a letter). Microdots and dots are tiny tablets used by spies. Both types are swallowed, and can take between thirty and sixty minutes to take effect, so prepare for a bit of a relax before the 'trip', which may last for anything up to 12 hours - and once it starts, there's no stopping it (bit like your Mother in law really). Effects - visual and sound distortions (again like you Mother in law) intensified colours and changes in sense of time and place are common. The effect depends on the user's mood, where they are and who they're with, making the experience different every time. Users may experience intense and changeable emotions (this is the best time to make a start on the novel you always wanted to write). Risks - experience a bad 'trip' and you'll know about it! Once it has begun, there's no going back (forwards or sideways). Users may feel anxious, unpleasant, disorientating and threatening feelings, and paranoia. Some people forget they've taken the drug and believe they're going mad, go along with that feeling, it is normal. You feel tired, drained and confused for some considerable time afterwards (like most late evenings). Users can also experience flashbacks, as with the BBC when they have nothing else to show. Magic Mushrooms
Magic Mushrooms are hallucinogenic and are also called shrooms or mushies. They grow wild in many parts of the U.K. in early autumn or late summer- the main type is the Liberty Cap Mushroom, looking like a willie, though not such a bitter taste. Mushrooms can be eaten raw, dried, cooked or stewed into a tea or infusion (but remember Nuclear things are dangerous).Highs -Magic Mushrooms have a similar effect to L.S.D. but the trip is often milder and shorter (you do save money though). The effects begin after about 29 minutes, peaking at about 3 hours and lasting up to 9.17 hours. Effects are very dependent on the user's mood and expectations. Low doses produce happiness, giggliness and detachment (which is how Hi De Hi was always filmed). Lows - the biggest danger with mushrooms is picking the wrong ones (they do look like willies). Some species can cause serious illness and even fatal poisoning, which may be serious. Magic Mushrooms may cause stomach-ache, nausea and vomiting, but other cooked mushrooms can do that. Users can also suffer from dizziness, disorientation, depression and panic. Like L.S.D. flashbacks cause problems, and like any hallucinogen, they can complicate mental problems, so try not to have any mental problems. Poppers Poppers, (also called Liquid Gold, Rave, TNT, dynamite, semtex, nitro and Ram), are all alkyl nitrites (try saying that while stoned). Poppers come in small screw top bottles as a clear or straw-coloured liquid, like Coke and Pepsi really. They are often available in sex shops, which is another good reason for visiting sex shops. The vapour is inhaled through the mouth or nose, very much like Vicks vapour rub. Highs - effects begin instantly and last a few minutes. Users get a brief but intense head-rush caused by a surge of blood through the heart and brain. Some users may experience the impression of time slowing down (winding the clock normally cures this). Lows - the sudden reduction in blood pressure can cause fainting, farting and burping leading to unconsciousness. Users may experience headaches, nausea and vomiting - regular use can cause skin problems such as the swelling of nasal passages, a sneeze at this time could be fatal. Speed - (A Film with a bus in it) - also Amphetamine Sulphate Speed (also called Billy and Wizzer chips and the Beano) comes in the form of a coloured or off-white powder and is packaged in a 'wrap' made from an envelope of folded paper with a tax return in it. It may be snorted, swallowed, smoked, injected or dissolved in a drink. Effects - speed is a stimulant (great, get me some speed, stimulate me darlin); the mind races and users feel confident, talkative and cheerful. It can keep the user awake, and is sometimes used by clubbers as a dance stimulant. It suppresses the appetite but doesn't satisfy the body's need for nourishment, very much like a pot noodle. Risks - amphetamines may be cut with a variety of impurities ranging from talcum powder to horse tranquillisers (what will they use to calm the horses?). As a result, speed is rarely more than 5% pure when sold on the streets (much like prostitutes). The come-down is associated with tiredness and depression and can last for one or two hundred days. Long term use can cause insomnia, mood swings, irritability, paranoia and mental confusion. Users may become physically run down due to lack of sleep, food, and have lower resistance to disease.
